The Toshiba DKT 2000 Series phones were the first digital phone system from Toshiba. The system was not a big change from the analog system Toshiba was making just before. Other than moving from analog to digital the phones look much alike inside and outside. One of the nicest things about Toshiba business telephone systems is that they kept it simple. Most other phone system manufacturers came out with different systems that require different model phones. With Toshiba, you can use your old analog phones with the new digital sets on the same system. Even the latest 3000 series are somewhat compatible, however you can not use the old analog phones with the latest systems.

There are two common problems with Toshiba Digital DKT 2000 series phones. The first repair problem is the hook-switch. The switch is pushed down by a spring when you lift the handset. The switch was not the best choice and tends to break down after only a few years of moderate to heavy use. When the switch starts to go bad it will have intermittent connections and disconnect calls, especially if the phone is agitated. Ever single Toshiba DKT 2000 series phone should have it's hook switch replaced and we replace every one that we repair or sell. Our replacement switch has larger contacts. All the testing we have done shows that our new hook switch design will last much longer then the original.

The other common problem with the Toshiba DKT phones is from abuse. The main circuit boards are thin and single sided and do not stand up well to angry people punching them. They can also break from shipping damage if not enough packing material is used, or from dropping, etc... The main board gets a crack in it and breaks circuit board tracings. Sometimes we can repair the tracings by running jumper wires but often times the cracks are large and break dozens of tiny connections. Even after repair you have to worry about the cracks becoming larger and adding strength support is not always possible. Unfortunately, it is likely that the hook switch starts to act up, disconnecting calls. People get frustrated with the telephone and act out on the poor little guy, turning a simple hook switch replacement into a much bigger problem.

Toshiba phones also had a shadow called Harris Lanier. Harris Lanier made copies of the Toshiba phones, some looked exactly the same, some were slightly different but they all worked just the same. Recently, the Harris Lanier copies are exactly the same except for the color of, and the name printed on, the plastic housing. Harris Lanier phones were not available in dark charcoal like the Toshiba phones but a light gray color instead.
