Your phone's battery level display is little more than a guess based on a good battery. It will not alert you to a bad battery. If your battery is older than 3 years a new battery is highly recommended.

To gain the required voltage the phone uses voltage multiplier circuitry. This lowers the current to increase voltage. Old batteries have a harder time producing current. Electronic parts have a tolerance (slight differences) so a bad battery can react differently in each phone making it harder to locate a battery as the cause when swapping them around. It is essential to have a few new batteries available to eliminate the battery as a cause for many problems.
