Comdial Impact is the second generation of digital phones from Comdial. They look very different from all the previous Comdial phones, even the handset has changed dramatically and is no longer a standard K-style handset. Other then looks, there were not a lot of differences in the phones over the older Digitech series.

So far, the keypads seem to hold up better then the old Comdial phones however they do not hold up as well against light drink spills or excessive dust because the rubber keypad area is much smaller and does not block any intrusions. Unfortunately, Comdial is still relying on melting plastic tabs to hold parts together. For the Impact phones, the entire phone circuit board is held in with permanent plastic tabs that have to be broken to do most repairs. This makes even the simplest repair job a hassle.

The hook switch on the Impact phones is not as sturdy as the older Comdial designs. There are small plastic snaps that hold the plastic parts of the hook switch in and allow for movement. After many years of use, the plastic rubs together and slowly wears away making the snaps that hold the hook switch in weaker. Eventually the hook switch will just pop out but most of the time they end up falling out (or breaking off) because of rough handling and the wearing out makes this more likely to happen. We consider this a common problem and have been repairing each one for a few years now even if they do not need it.

The plastic housing on the Comdial 80XX and 81XX Impact phones can not be easily re-finished or painted if they become discolored or worn from age. There are LED clear plastic windows for each of the button lights and the display that can not be removed and have to be masked off during painting. That coupled with the fact that the circuit boards are held in with plastic tabs that have to be broken off makes the Comdial Impact phones not worth the time involved to make them look like new once more.

The recently built 8024 Impact phones and most of the 8312 and 8324 have a problem with the displays going dead. The Impact displays are a custom part, found in nothing else that we are aware of, and replacements are not easily to get.

The handsets from the 80XX and 81XX Comdial Impact phones (example: Comdial 8024S-GT) will not work on the 83XX and 84XX series Impact phones (example: Comdial 8324S-PT) They look virtually identical and have the same internal components, however the angle that the older designed handsets rest down at will not push the hookswitch down far enough on the 83XX to hang up the phone. Both the older and newer handsets work on the older phones 80XX.

Many people mistake the "S" in the part number for a "5" (Example: Comdial 80245-GT) All of the Comdial part numbers have only 4 numbers followed by letter codes.
