Digitech was the first all digital system from Comdial. It used the same basic style as the Executech II series with a few changes. Early models looked exactly like the Executech 6614 and 6600 sets. Luckily those older sets are rare because it can get confusing! The same part numbers were used for the older style and newer style Digitech phones however the older style did not have as many buttons so programming and set-up for them is a bit different. The newer style Digitech phones started using up and down volume buttons instead of the volume slide, this allowed multiple settings for volume, one for the speakerphone, one for the ring, one for the handset, and all used the same volume control. Also, the newer style Digitech have dual color LEDs to give more detail in the status of lines that are in use. The main control unit (also called the KSU, DSU for digital, or PBX) is very similar looking to the older Comdial KSUs however now you can change the programming cartridge. Different programming cartridges could upgrade the system and features. You could also use the same control unit with different programming cartridges to control different types of Comdial phones (Digitech, Impact, Impression) The Digitech phone sets themselves were pretty sturdy when they were new, however with age they are falling into a similar fate as the older Executech. The keypads are actually a bit worse then the older Comdial phones. They are wearing out just like the old keypads, however the lettering is also wearing off quickly. Also the small rubber buttons and rubber LED light covers are ripping and chunks will actually break off. These parts are not easily found and the keypads are difficult to work on even if you can find the parts. There is another problem with the Digitech phones that is occurring with age. There are many tiny surface mount capacitors that are starting to leak fluid. After a few years the fluid corrodes the circuit board and makes a big mess while eating through the circuit tracings! It is likely that ALL Digitech phones are at least starting to show some leakage around a few of the capacitors. Tips:
Comdial manuals -
Comdial user guides You can get caller ID and voice mail on the Digitech. It still is not the easiest project and parts are starting to get scarce. If you have a Digitech system, you could easily get a higher level programming cartridge for your system and start replacing your Digitech phones with Impact phones.
