The Partner MLS phones have a major problem with the keypad. Does your phone ring continuously? Does it beep randomly, pick up phone lines by itself??? Just about every single MLS phone needs to have it's keypad replaced. The single sided flexible mylar keypads have painted circuit tracings on them. When these tracings need to cross, there is a layer or green painted insulation. Well, the insulation worked great for a few years then decided to let a little electricity through. The problem is aggravated by humidity and the buttons that give out first are usually the 1,4,7,* and the UP VOLUME button. Try pressing and holding the up volume button on an MLS phone and you will get constant high volume ring tone. We tried repairing these for a few years by by-passing the areas that tended to short out and building new circuit tracings. However the problem only got worse with age and other areas started to short out. There is really no choice but to replace the keypad membrane. The good news is, there are double sided keypads that the tracings move to the other side of the membrane instead of crossing over each other. Those keypads do not have the same problems.

The Avaya Partner Euro style phones did not use a membrane keypad, but went for the good old rubber pad with carbon pills that complete a connection on a real circuit board. They do not have keypad problems (yet) unless there is a spill or heavy dust problem. The Partner Euro style phones seem to be a little more susceptible to lightning and surge damage then the older MLS series.

If you are unaware, AT&T transferred their phone manufacturing side over to Lucent and focused on providing phone service, long distance and cellular service. Later Lucent sold the phone manufacturing to Avaya who now handles all AT&T and Lucent phones.
